We often hear the term income tax in our daily life, but we still get confused a lot of times. What is it, and how does it work? In today’s blog, we will explore a detailed definition of income tax, provide an example, and explain how to file it easily using the Income Tax Filing Guide 2025.
What is Income Tax?
Consider income tax as a type of direct tax imposed by the government on an individual or business during a financial year. The government uses this tax for societal welfare, such as building schools, roads, and hospitals. The income tax calculation is based on your taxable income, derived after deducting permissible exemptions, deductions, and allowances from the total income. Simply put, income tax is the part of your income you pay to the government based on how much you earn. Each time you earn money, whether from a job, business, or investments, the government may take a portion.
Here’s a simple example for your better understanding:
Suppose you earn ₹3,50,000 in a year. The government says:
- An individual or Business having income up to ₹2,50,000 is not taxed.
- Income between ₹2,50,000 and ₹5,00,000 is taxed at a rate of 5%.
Since your income is ₹3,50,000 and only ₹1,00,000 is liable to be taxed, you need to pay only ₹5,000 to the government as tax.
But here you are eligible for a rebate under Section 87A because your income is less than ₹5,00,000. The rebate is equal to your tax liability or ₹5,000, whichever is less. So, you will have to pay ₹0. I will discuss the rebate further in our next blog.. We will further talk about the rebate in our next blog.
